Synopsis

In pre-war Shanghai, a mysterious figure known as "the King of Death" prowls the dangerous streets in this action-packed prequel to Fist of the North Star. Shanghai during the 1930s is a perilous place. Foreign powers and Chinese factions have divided the city into separate quarters, each with its own laws and governing bodies, all steeped in corruption. While the major forces compete for political dominance, the streets are left to local gangs. Life holds little value, and death lurks around every corner. In a bygone era, one man traversed these mean streets, fighting against the forces of evil. He was known only as Yan Wang, "the King of Death." Few knew his true identity, but many recognized him as a master of Hokuto Shinken—the Fist of the North Star—a lethal martial art. He vanished years ago after eliminating the city's worst criminals, and now rumors place him in Japan. Various individuals have journeyed to Japan in search of him, but who will locate him first?

On the violent streets of Shanghai, where disorder holds sway and two rival mafia groups contest for dominance, a different Kenshirou once existed before becoming the legendary hero. In the midst of this turmoil, a young woman named Erika loses her family and is taken in by martial artist Liu Fei-Yan. Although he tries to place her in the protection of other guardians, each one meets a tragic end. Resolved to secure Erika's long-term safety, Fei-Yan decides to bring her to an individual called Guise. But their journey intersects with that of Kenshirou Kasumi, a powerful fighter.
