Marvel and Kadokawa Swing Into Japan With Spider-Man of Shibuya Manga

Marvel is planting a fresh flag in the manga world. During the Marvel Fanfare panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the publisher confirmed a partnership with Kadokawa for a slate of original manga—about five volumes in the first wave—with serialization eyed before the year is out.

The flagship title is Spider-Man of Shibuya, drawn by tokitokoro (Jeff the Land Shark, River in Me). Instead of a simple reprint, it re-centers the web-slinger as a Japanese high schooler swinging through neon Shibuya streets. Concept art also teases Japan-flavored takes on Daredevil and a yakuza-coded Punisher, underscoring that this line is built for local storytelling, not translation alone.

Riding shotgun is a Spider-Gwen manga from Ryūsei Yamada (Revenger, Disney Twisted-Wonderland: The Manga—Anthology). The timing is sharp: Shueisha’s Marvel manga deal ends September 30, with titles such as Spider-Man: Octo-Girl and Deadpool: Samurai heading off digital storefronts. Marvel’s own Asia Originals push—and C.B. Cebulski’s move into that editorial lane—makes Kadokawa the new Japanese home for web-heads and beyond.
