SDCC 2026 Lights Up as Gundam’s RG Project Takes the Floor

San Diego Comic-Con 2026 turned into a full-scale Gundam summit when Bandai Namco Filmworks staged the world premiere of its next-generation RG Project. Hosted by Christopher Sean, the panel put Executive Producer Naohiro Ogata on stage with director Kenji Kamiyama and producers Joseph Chou and Yasufumi Kobashi for Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, plus GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT producer Shinya Satake—making the packed hall the first audience anywhere to see the new saga unveiled.

Kamiyama, a lifelong Gundam fan who first fell for the franchise at fifteen, framed the job as less “whether” and more “how” to honor the franchise while carving out something new. Crafted with SF worldbuilding partner Toh EnJoe and animated at SOLA ANIMATION, the 2027 TV anime opens a clean-slate After Apocalypse timeline roughly a century before the high-mobility action game GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT. Both titles share one continuous world; the anime seeds the catastrophe that later generations still fight.

The floor reaction tracked the high stakes on screen. Protagonist Ray Azumi—voiced by Takeo Otsuka—is a war orphan and dedicated pilot of Gundam Zero, awakening on the Moon after an alien, self-proliferating ecosystem dubbed the Apocalypse forced humanity off Earth. Producer Yasufumi Kobashi summed up the creative brief bluntly: you have to break taboos to make something genuinely new. The game side answered with a first look at the bulkier, “human-like” Gundam Helix and the Apocalypse’s in-game presence, also aimed at 2027.

The panel closed like a Gunpla catalog come to life—HG Gundam Zero kits, GUNDAM UNIVERSE and METAL ROBOT SPIRITS figures, card-game crossovers, and more—while Bandai’s collectibles team later thanked the weekend crowd for turning the booth into a celebration. For mecha fans, SDCC 2026 did more than drop trailers: it mapped a multimedia launchpad and handed the room the first real handshake with Gundam’s next era.
