Synopsis
In a world filled with brutal murders, petty crimes, and senseless violence, the realm of the Shinigami remains a monotonous gambling haven. Light Yagami, a brilliant 17-year-old Japanese student, and Ryuk, a bored Shinigami, both feel that their respective worlds are flawed. Ryuk decides to entertain himself by dropping his Death Note into the human world, where it is discovered by Light. Though Light initially dismisses the first rule as ridiculous—any human whose name is written in the notebook will die—he cannot resist the temptation and writes down the name of a criminal, leading to his first successful murder. Awed by the immense power at his disposal, Light adopts the alias Kira and begins his crusade to eliminate all criminals under the guise of justice. His actions do not go unnoticed; L, a meticulous and brilliant detective, takes up the hunt for Kira. As Light's intellect matches L's, the ensuing battle of wits becomes a deadly game with only one possible outcome: the death of one of them.
