

Synopsis
In 1950s Japan, Tatsuo Kusakabe moves his family to a countryside home to be near their mother, who is recovering in the hospital from a long-term illness. His daughters, Satsuki and Mei, quickly get used to their new rural surroundings. One day, Mei chases a tiny, rabbit-like creature into the woods and comes across Totoro, a huge, magical forest spirit, and they quickly form a bond. Later, Satsuki also meets Totoro, and the two sisters share various whimsical experiences with nature and other forest spirits.
Background
In 1988, Tonari no Totoro won the Best Film and Ofuji Noburo awards in the Mainichi Film Awards, the Special Award in the 31st Blue Ribbon Awards, the Grand Prix in the Animage Anime Awards, and the Best Film and Reader's Choice Award: Best Japanese Film awards in the Kinema Junpo Awards.
