As World War II nears its end in 1945, Japan suffers widespread devastation from American air raids that destroy city after city. Grave of the Fireflies, known in Japanese as Hotaru no Haka, tells the tale of Seita and his younger sister Setsuko, two Japanese children whose lives are ruined by the brutal war. They have lost their mother, their father, their home, and any hope for a bright future—all tragic outcomes of the conflict.
Now orphaned and without shelter, Seita and Setsuko are forced to wander the countryside, afflicted by hunger and disease. Encountering indifference from adults along the way, they find that desperate times can turn even the kindest people cruel—yet their youthful hope shines brightly in the face of relentless hardship, preventing the siblings from quickly succumbing to their inevitable fate.
