High school student Suzume Iwato encounters a mysterious young man named Souta Munakata on her way to school. Souta is searching for abandoned locations, and after Suzume directs him toward a nearby ruin, her own curiosity leads her to follow. At the site, she discovers an isolated door leading to an ethereal, dreamlike realm she can sense but cannot enter. Nearby lies a strange stone that transforms into a cat-like creature and dashes away upon being touched. Alarmed, Suzume flees back toward her school, unaware of the disastrous consequences of leaving the door unsealed. The release of the "keystone" allows a malevolent force trapped within the alternate dimension to escape and cause destruction across Japan. Determined to fix her serious mistake, Suzume teams up with Souta, whose true mission is to stop the evil's spread, to find and close every open door before the country is ruined.
