On the day her family moved into the new house, five-year-old Ami-chan made friends with three talking animals that appeared through a door in her bedroom floor. She discovered the door opened onto Animal Yokocho, an alternate world. The three were Issa, a sweet-natured panda with a quiet, innocent way of speaking; Kenta, a tense bear who loved red scarves and rarely dropped his tough-guy posturing; and Iyo, a rabbit who generally placed her own comfort and enjoyment above the happiness—or safety—of the others. Though just a five-year-old, Ami-chan was easily the most levelheaded of the bunch; after an initial bit of wariness, she accepted them and began passing her free time with the trio. A typical day had Ami-chan and the others doing all sorts of things to kill time, often playing a harmless-looking game—but in the AniYoko manner. Regrettably for Ami-chan, the AniYoko take on things usually proved wildly different, much less sensible, and more often than not a good deal more dangerous than the ordinary version. Five-year-old Ami-chan, a kindergarten girl, has a secret that cannot be told to anyone: she spends her days with mysterious animals who come to her house. Those animals include a rabbit named Iyo, a bear named Kenta, and a panda named Issa. They actually belong to Anima Yokocho, the place reached through the hidden door in Ami-chan's room. And of course, various other mysterious residents of Animal Yokocho will show up in time as well.
