Kiki, a thirteen-year-old witch still in training, must live on her own for a full year in a faraway town to become a fully qualified witch. Leaving behind her family and friends, Kiki undertakes this tradition by flying out into the wide world on her broomstick, accompanied by her black cat Jiji.
After settling in the coastal town of Koriko, Kiki has trouble adjusting and ends up roaming the streets without a place to stay—until she meets Osono, who gives Kiki room and board in return for helping deliver items from her small bakery. Soon afterward, Kiki decides to start her own courier service using her broomstick, beginning her journey toward independence. As she tries to find her place among the townspeople, Kiki brings them exciting new experiences and comes to grasp the true meaning of responsibility.
