Two childhood friends, Akira Houjou and Chiaki Asami, have survived hell together and come to Japan to attend school. There, they quickly observe the nation's corruption and widespread apathy. Furious, the pair pledge to build a new Japan—a sanctuary with a reformed political system free of corruption, where citizens have the power to shape their country's future. To realize this, Houjou and Asami intend to conquer Japan through two radically different routes: the Japanese Diet and the Yakuza. Settled by a game of rock-paper-scissors, Houjou takes control of the underworld while Asami aims for the Prime Minister's office. Sanctuary is a dark political thriller that follows these two friends as they try to transform Japan from the inside out and create their sanctuary.

Background

Sanctuary was published in English by VIZ Media under its VIZ Premiere Comics imprint in 46 issues, split into five parts, from January 1993 to March 1997. VIZ Media then compiled the chapters into nine volumes published between May 1995 and February 5, 1998. The English release was nominated for the 1995 Harvey Award for Best American Edition of Foreign Material. The first six volumes of the series were also published in Brazilian Portuguese by Conrad from June 2006 to April 2008.
