With no other options, she turns to a con artist for help. On the same day, the notorious swindler Shinichi Akiyama is released from prison. A former psychology student infamous for bankrupting an entire company single-handedly, he is Nao's only hope. Initially hesitant to risk another crime, he ignores her pleas. However, moved by her desperation and persistence, he eventually agrees to aid her. In this world of deception, Nao and Shinichi each have their own reasons for participating. But soon, they begin to see the true nature of not just the game, but everyone involved.

The series was adapted into a two-season Japanese television series, with the first season airing in 2007 and the second season from 2009 to 2010. It also received two live-action films: Liar Game: The Final Stage in 2010 and Liar Game: Reborn in 2012. It was also adapted into a Korean live-action drama that aired from October 20, 2014, to November 25, 2014.
