Born in Osaka Prefecture, Japan, Range Murata is a Japanese artist and designer celebrated for his distinctive aesthetic that merges Art Deco influences with Japanese anime elements. He is most renowned for his conceptual design contributions to the anime series Last Exile and Blue Submarine No. 6. Murata launched his career in the early 1990s with design work for video games, a field he continues to engage in today; he recently provided character designs for the PlayStation 2 title Spy Fiction. His published portfolio includes more than a dozen books, with notable titles such as Robot, Rule, and futurhythm. In recognition of his achievements, he was voted "Best Artist of the Year" at the 2006 Seiun Award. Additionally, Murata curated an elite group of artists, including Yoshitoshi ABe and Ugetsu Hakua, to contribute to the first volume and subsequent issues of ROBOT.
