In the bustling streets of Tokyo, Satoru Mikami, a 37-year-old office worker, goes about his routine until a sudden robbery leaves him mortally wounded. On the verge of death, Satoru's final thought is his regret of dying without ever experiencing love. Just as he slips into darkness, a peculiar AI-like voice surprises him by issuing commands. Awakening in an unfamiliar cavern, Satoru discovers he has been reborn as a slime. In this new form, he possesses the unique ability to absorb other entities, inheriting their traits and powers. Exploring his newfound abilities within the cave, he comes across Veldora, a colossal dragon sealed there for three centuries. Forming a quick bond, Satoru agrees to aid Veldora in breaking free from his imprisonment. As a token of gratitude, Veldora bestows upon Satoru a new identity: "Rimuru Tempest." With the goal of leading a more exciting life than his previous one, Rimuru sets out on a grand journey, destined to shape not only his own path but also the course of this new world.

Tensei shitara Slime Datta Ken has been published in English as That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime by Kodansha Comics USA since August 22, 2017, and as 3-in-1 omnibus volumes since April 2, 2024. The series has also been simulpub through K Manga. The series won the 46th Kodansha Manga Award in the shounen manga category in 2022.
