Mikan Sakura and Hotaru Imai share an unbreakable bond, even though Hotaru often acts distant. Mikan believes their friendship will last, but her confidence is shaken when Hotaru leaves for Tokyo to attend the elite Alice Academy, a school for children who possess special powers called Alices. Unable to bear losing her best friend, Mikan runs away from home to try and enroll at the same academy. After she gets accepted and reunites with Hotaru, Mikan discovers that Alice Academy is far more complicated than she expected. The school operates under a strict system where students are ranked based on the strength of their Alice, behavior, and academic performance, and they are divided into specialized groups for lessons. Placed among the lower ranks, Mikan faces hostility from classmates who doubt she belongs there. Among them is Natsume Hyuuga, a high-ranking student whose antagonism toward Mikan has no clear reason. As the students explore the academy's inner workings, they uncover hidden secrets that go far beyond what they imagined. Mikan and her friends become drawn into a conspiracy much larger than they first realized.
