Miyazawa Kenji no Shokutaku
宮沢賢治の食卓
In 1921, Miyazawa Kenji walked away from his well-off household and settled in Tokyo, where he supported himself for eight months. Near the end of summer, a telegram from his family arrived, and fearing for his younger sister Toshi’s health, Kenji hurried home. Waiting for him there was his father, Masajiro, who had lied about Toshi’s condition because he was concerned about Kenji living alone. Still, Kenji has yet to discover his true purpose in life. He prepares korokke (potato croquettes), a dish he had tried in Tokyo, and serves it to his family. Through this, he comes to understand that sharing his happiness is what suits him best. Honoring Toshi’s wish, Kenji takes up a teaching post at a newly established agricultural school.
