In "Natsume's Book of Friends," 15-year-old Takashi Natsume longs for an ordinary life. Like his late grandmother Reiko, he has the rare ability to see youkai, or spirits. He learns Reiko left behind a "Book of Friends," a collection of contracts binding spirits. Because Reiko never summoned them by name, these spirits remain trapped and now seek Natsume to release them and regain their freedom. Some benevolent spirits approach Natsume for help, while others are dangerous and threaten him. Among his helpers is Madara, a spirit who appears as a chubby cat and is often called Nyanko-sensei by Natsume. Madara acts as a self-appointed guardian with his own reasons for staying close. This supernatural slice-of-life series follows Natsume as he navigates both spirit and human worlds, striving for normalcy and gaining important life lessons along his journey.
