In an alternate timeline diverging from Fate/stay night, the Greater Grail vanishes after the Third Holy Grail War in Fuyuki and remains hidden for years. Around the early 2000s, when the Fifth Holy Grail War would have occurred, the group that stole the Grail, Yggdmillennia, declares their secession from the Mage's Association and reveals their possession of the artifact. The Association sends fifty magi to reclaim it, but only one survives Lancer of Black's assault. This survivor triggers the Greater Grail's emergency protocol, enabling the summoning of fourteen Servants. The Great Holy Grail War begins in Trifas, with participants split into two opposing factions: the Black Faction, made up of Yggdmillennia members, and the Red Faction, composed of representatives from the Mage's Association, including one member from the Church. Additionally, the Grail itself summons Ruler to serve as mediator for the conflict.
