In the town of Tokeizaka, there is an old and somewhat run-down boarding house called Maison Ikkoku, which has long been home to a lively group of tenants. Among them is Yusaku Godai, a 20-year-old aspiring college student who recently moved in. Yusaku grows increasingly frustrated with the rowdy behavior of his fellow tenants, which disturbs his studies, leading him to consider leaving. However, his plans are interrupted by the arrival of Kyoko Otonashi, a beautiful woman who reveals herself to be the new caretaker of the house. Captivated by her, Yusaku decides to stay, determined to win her affection. At first, Yusaku believes he is making progress in getting closer to Kyoko, but he learns that she is a widow struggling with the loss of her husband. Although Kyoko begins to develop feelings for Yusaku, she firmly refuses to date or remarry, as she remains devoted to her deceased spouse. Respecting her grief, Yusaku dedicates himself to helping Kyoko heal with the support of the other tenants, hoping that one day she will see him as more than just another tenant.

Maison Ikkoku was published in English by VIZ Media from October 24, 2003, to February 14, 2006. The publisher later rereleased the series as 10 collector's edition volumes. It was also released in Spanish by Glénat España from May 2004 to January 2013; and in France by Tonkam Edition from January 2001 to January 2003.
