Much of the chaos attributed to "Vash" stems from bounty hunters chasing after the sixty-billion "double dollar" reward for his role in the destruction of July City. Despite this, Vash, who has limited memories of the incident, seeks only "love and peace." Though he possesses exceptional shooting skills, he uses his guns primarily to shield lives rather than harm them. As the story progresses, more insights into Vash's enigmatic background and the history of human civilization on the barren planet Gunsmoke are revealed. The series maintains a light-hearted tone while delving into significant character development, particularly in its latter stages, where it becomes emotionally intense. A priest named Nicholas D. Wolfwood often travels with Vash, being almost equally adept with firearms. Later in the series, Vash encounters a team of assassins known as the Gung-Ho Guns, whose motives against him are initially unclear. Trigun evolves into a profound exploration of morality, questioning what defines right and wrong, the validity of different ethical frameworks, and whether one can atone for past transgressions. It raises doubts about the integrity of moral codes when they are breached and considers if it's still possible to adhere to these principles after such breaches.

Trigun was published in English by Dark Horse Comics in two volumes from October 21, 2003, to January 10, 2004. The publisher later released a complete omnibus volume of the manga.
