An enormous explosion reduces the moon to a permanent crescent, forever altering the night sky. A yellow, tentacled monster then appears before global leaders, claiming responsibility for the catastrophe and threatening to destroy Earth within a year. Traveling at Mach 20, the creature makes an unconventional demand: to teach at the esteemed Kunugigaoka Junior High School. To contain the threat, the government reluctantly agrees, placing the students of Class 3-E on an impossible quest—to assassinate the creature responsible for the lunar devastation. While bearing the burden of saving the world, the students also face personal struggles. Positioned at the bottom of Kunugigaoka’s rigid academic hierarchy, they suffer from the bias of teachers and classmates. Overwhelmed with feelings of hopelessness, they question their ability to achieve even basic life goals, let alone confront a being far more powerful than any human. As the enigmatic Koro-sensei imparts lessons in both murder and academics, however, the students slowly gain the courage to rise up against what may be the greatest adversary in history. Background
Ansatsu Kyoushitsu ranked first in the 2014 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! in the Male Readers division. The manga was named the best work of 2013 on the Book of the Year list by Nippon Shuppan Hanbai. It was nominated for the 2013 Manga Taishou Award, ranking sixth, and the 19th Tezuka Osamu Annual Prize in 2015. The series has sold over 20 million copies as of 2016. The series was published in English as Assassination Classroom by VIZ Media under the Shonen Jump Advanced imprint from December 2, 2014, to April 3, 2018. It was also released in Italian by Planet Manga from May 10, 2014, to September 14, 2017; in Brazilian Portuguese by Panini Comics from 2020 to 2022; in Spanish by Panini Comics from October 1, 2014, to February 22, 2018; and in Polish by Japonica Polonica Fantastica from December 14, 2017, to September 2021. A VOMIC version was broadcast in Sakiyomi Jan Bang! from January to June 2013; the series has received a fanbook, databook, spin-off manga, and an illustrated English language guidebook called Koro-tan. A live-action film of the series was released in Japan on March 21, 2015, which opened first at the box office; a second film was released on March 25, 2016.
