Ikoku Nikki

The synopsis: Thirty-five-year-old novelist Makio Koudai has always had a tense relationship with her older sister Minori, who frequently criticized Makio for being unconventional. When Minori and her husband die in a car accident, Makio feels little sadness but still has to identify their bodies. During that process, she meets her teenage niece Asa Takumi, whom she has not seen in years. As Asa struggles with the sudden loss of her parents, Makio consoles her by explaining that her mixed emotions are normal and suggests keeping a diary to process her feelings. Since no other family members are willing to take care of Asa, Makio decides to become her guardian, despite having no experience raising a child. Together, the unlikely pair must navigate their new lives, learning to coexist and understand themselves better in an uncertain world.

Background

Ikoku Nikki was nominated for the Manga Taisho award in 2019 and 2020, placing fourth and tenth, respectively. In 2020, it ranked tenth on Kono Manga Sugoi!'s list for female readers. The series has been published in French by Kana since July 9, 2021; and in Italian by Flashbook since July 14, 2021. Ikoku Nikki was adapted into a live-action movie in 2024.
