In the village of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island, Miss Marilla Cuthbert and Mr. Matthew Cuthbert, a pair of middle-aged siblings, live on their farm, Green Gables. They intend to adopt an orphan boy to assist with the farm work, but a mix-up leads them to take in an eleven-year-old girl named Anne Shirley instead. Anne is clever and energetic, always eager to make a favorable impression. Though she dislikes her name and her appearance—freckles, pale skin, and long red hair—she possesses a vivid imagination and finds delight in life. She quickly adjusts to her new surroundings and flourishes in the beauty of Prince Edward Island.
