High school freshman Hotaru Hinase values her family and friends above all else and believes she can live a fulfilling life without falling in love. While at a café with a close friend, Hotaru sees a handsome top student named Hananoi being harshly rejected by his date. Later, as she heads home, she finds him sitting alone in the cold and lends him her umbrella out of kindness. The next day, Hananoi shows up in Hotaru's classroom and asks her to become his girlfriend. Though she turns down his offer, he continues to stay close to her, often doing considerate things to make her happy. As Hotaru starts to experience unfamiliar feelings, she begins to believe they could grow into love and agrees to date Hananoi.
