In New York City, Interpol agent Taki Kazuya looks into a series of strange disappearances and murders that suggest supernatural forces are at work. Taki often tells the orphans he has befriended about his ally, the legendary cyborg hero Kamen Rider, who defeated the evil Shocker organization and defended people from monstrous threats in Japan without ever seeking fame. Only this group of children truly listens to his stories. After one of the orphans is turned into a monster, Taki crafts a makeshift costume and declares himself a new Kamen Rider, but his effort to fight the creature nearly ends in failure. At the moment he is overwhelmed, the original Kamen Rider, Takeshi Hongo, appears and rescues him. Working together, they manage to defeat the monsters. Following this encounter, Hongo warns Taki about an upcoming danger to humanity and asks for his help. Hongo then departs to find the eight former Kamen Riders who once stood with him. Meanwhile, Taki continues his Interpol duties while assisting Hongo's search for allies.

Background

Kamen Rider Spirits is a sequel to many entries in the tokusatsu franchise Kamen Rider, bringing together characters from the franchise's first seven installments. It was originally serialized in Magazine Z and ended when the magazine ceased publication. The story was later resumed in Monthly Shonen Magazine with a sequel series titled Shin Kamen Rider Spirits. It currently holds the record for the longest running manga based on a tokusatsu show.
