In the early Meiji era, the Gokumonjou, an inescapable prison, sits at the center of a vast lake, built to handle the rising crime of the new age. The Kumou brothers serve as its renowned ferrymen: the unpredictable patriarch Tenka, the fiery yet principled second son Soramaru, and the naive youngest brother Chuutarou. Despite their grim duties, they live a relatively peaceful life in the perpetually overcast town of Oumi with their housekeeper, Shirasu Kinjou. But deep in Oumi’s history lies the legend of Orochi, a monstrous serpent that reincarnates every three centuries within a human host. Unknown to Soramaru and Chuutarou, the Kumou family’s true purpose is to imprison Orochi before it fully regains its power, preventing global destruction. As the beast’s rebirth approaches, the siblings must gather their courage to keep finding laughter beneath the clouds.
