In "Mahoraba," Shiratori Ryushi dreams of becoming a picture book creator and moves into the traditional Japanese boarding house Narutaki-So in Tokyo to attend an art school. The landlady is his second cousin, Aoba Kozue, a second-year high school student at a school connected to Aoba Junior College. Shiratori and Kozue knew each other as children, but he remembers little of her. Narutaki-So has five other residents. Room #1 is Chanohata Kotomi, Kozue's close friend. Room #3 belongs to the carefree Momono Megumi. Room #5 is home to Kurosaki Sayoko and her junior high school daughter Asami. In room #6, Haibara Yukio lives with his puppet "Johnny." Each resident has their own eccentricities, but Kozue may be the most unusual, as she has a hidden trait: her personality changes when she is startled. Unaware of this, Shiratori begins his new life at Narutaki-So, pursuing his artistic dreams. How will this new environment shape his future?
