Dilgear

Summary

Dilgear was a half-beastman and half-troll who served as a henchman for Zelgadiss Graywords and his great-grandfather, Rezo the Red Priest. Unlike Zolf, Rodimus, and Noonsa, Dilgear displayed significant violence in combat, willing to kill his opponents. Although he operated under Zelgadiss’ command, his true allegiance lay with Rezo. Consequently, Zelgadiss was not surprised when Dilgear turned against the chimera after Zelgadiss severed ties with Rezo following the death of Noonsa. In their initial confrontation, Dilgear was outmatched and retreated. During their second encounter, the arrival of Zolf and Rodimus initially gave Dilgear hope for rescue, but Rodimus declared their loyalty belonged to Zelgadiss, not Rezo. Zolf soon inflicted serious wounds on Dilgear, whose last words were a promise to return from death. Leveraging his half-troll regenerative abilities, Dilgear survived and returned, though he never achieved revenge. With nowhere else to go, he wandered into Zephilia and collapsed from starvation. Luna Inverse, who frequently fed stray animals, found him and chose to adopt him. He awoke chained inside a large doghouse in her backyard. Horrified to learn that Luna had renamed him Spot, Dilgear nonetheless remained her pet out of a sense of gratitude for saving his life. Some fans mistakenly believed Dilgear to be the beast form of Greater Beast Zelas Metallium, but in reality, Zelas and Luna were enemies, as Zelas is a mazoku while Luna serves the shinzoku. In the manga, Dilgear appeared differently than in the original novels or anime. Rather than being a henchman for Zelgadiss and Rezo, he was a bounty hunter dispatched by Eris Vrumugun alongside Rahanimu and Vrumugun to eliminate Gourry Gabriev and Lina Inverse. Dilgear disappeared shortly after his introduction, with the implication that he either fled or was killed off-screen.
