Summary
Saki Miyanaga serves as the protagonist of the Saki series and is a first-year student at Kiyosumi High School located in Nagano Prefecture. Her relationship with mahjong is complicated by her childhood experiences, where she played with family members but developed a strong aversion to the game. This dislike stemmed from the fact that losing cost her otoshidama, or New Year's money, while winning resulted in being scolded. To avoid both outcomes, Saki unconsciously developed a unique ability to end games with a net score of zero. Over time, this behavior became a deeply ingrained habit, causing her to stop actively attempting to win matches. The family dynamic shifted after her parents separated. Saki stayed in Nagano with her father, while her older sister, Teru, moved to Tokyo with their mother. Although Saki lost contact with Teru, she remained aware that her sister had become a top-tier mahjong player in high school. When Saki enrolled at Kiyosumi, her childhood friend Kyoutarou Suga invited her to the mahjong club. She reluctantly agreed and played several rounds with fellow first-years Nodoka Haramura and Yuuki Kataoka. During these matches, club president Hisa Takei observed Saki’s peculiar skill in manipulating her score, which astonished the other members. Following confrontations from both Nodoka and Hisa, Saki agreed to return for another match. While she continued to exhibit her score-manipulating ability, Hisa devised a strategy that allowed Saki to win rather than settle for a draw. The thrill of winning against opponents outside her family led Saki to officially join the club. She formed a close bond with Nodoka and made a promise to reach the national team tournament, a goal driven by her desire to reconcile with Teru.
