Edogawa, Conan

Summary

Shinichi Kudou is a seventeen-year-old student at Teitan High School renowned as a brilliant young detective, often called the Savior of the police force for solving cases that stump professionals. While investigating two mysterious figures, he is discovered and coerced into ingesting APTX 4869, an experimental poison that shrinks his body to that of a six-year-old child. Adopting the alias Conan Edogawa, a name derived from Arthur Conan Doyle and Ranpo Edogawa, he claims to be a distant relative of Professor Hiroshi Agasa and places himself under the care of Ran Mouri. Conan utilizes the Detective Agency owned by Ran’s father, Mouri Kogorou, to investigate the Black Organization. By using a special bowtie gadget created by Agasa to put Kogorou to sleep and mimic his voice, Conan solves cases under Kogorou’s name, inadvertently building the latter’s reputation as the Sleeping Kogorou. He also collaborates with the Detective Boys and Agasa on various minor cases. Despite his new form, Conan retains his sharp intellect and broad knowledge. He attempts to speak like a child but frequently slips into complex adult reasoning, justifying his advanced explanations by claiming he heard them on TV or learned them from Uncle Kogoro, Professor Agasa, or his older brother Shinichi-niichan. Conan shares a close bond with Ran, who is protective of him, though she remains unaware of his true identity. This secret leads to awkward situations, such as when Ran confesses her feelings for Shinichi to Conan or invites him to bathe with her at a hot spring. Conan openly expresses his love for Sherlock Holmes and soccer, deflecting suspicion by attributing his detailed knowledge to Shinichi. While adults initially view his intelligence as unusual for a child, they have grown accustomed to it over time. He can speak professionally with the FBI, including Jodie Starling, Shuichi Akai, and James Black, as well as Inspector Kansuke Yamato, all of whom suspect Conan hides more than meets the eye. Around the Detective Boys, Conan acts more naturally, though his familiarity with soccer often causes him to use inappropriate techniques in other games. The group, particularly Genta, perceives him as unintelligent due to his lack of knowledge regarding popular TV shows and video games. To compensate, Conan secretly watches television after Kogoro and Ran sleep to gain better social practice.
