Sune, Lalah

Summary

Born on November 21, 0062 U.C. in India, Lalah Sune is a seventeen-year-old prodigy recognized as the "star student" of Professor Flanagan. Her exceptional Newtype abilities make her a primary test subject for Newtype-related weaponry development, marking her as one of the earliest and most successful known Newtypes with profound spiritual awareness. Despite her gentle demeanor, she remains fiercely loyal to Char Aznable, the scheming "Red Comet" who saved her life after she was working in an Indian brothel following the loss of her parents in the war. Assigned to pilot the Newtype-use mobile armor MAN-08 Elmeth for the Flanagan Institute’s research, she holds the rank of ensign under Char’s command. Lalah and Amuro Ray first crossed paths on Side 6, where Amuro encountered her near a lakeside house. Their brief interaction sparked an attraction fueled by Amuro’s Newtype powers. They reunited later when Amuro’s vehicle became stuck in mud; Lalah and Char, aboard a helping vehicle, offered assistance. Although Amuro immediately recognized both, Char and Lalah did not yet know Amuro’s identity, despite him being Char’s archrival. Lalah became a profound influence on Amuro, regarded as his first great love. During a test run of the Elmeth, its Newtype "bits" weaponry devastated the Federal Fleet guarding the captured Zeon base Solomon. Amuro engaged the Elmeth in the Gundam, only to discover Lalah was the pilot. They realized they were soulmates, sharing a "Newtype bonding" telepathic connection. However, Char arrived and reprimanded Lalah for consorting with the enemy, raising his beam naginata to strike down Amuro’s wingman, Sayla Mass, who was piloting the CoreBooster jet. Lalah pleaded for Char to stop, sensing the pilot was actually his sister, Artesia (known as Sayla Mass). Char hesitated, allowing Amuro to sever Char’s Gelgoog’s weapon arm. As Amuro prepared a killing blow, Lalah pushed Char out of the way, taking the fatal strike herself. This event escalated the rivalry between the two men from professional to deeply personal, culminating in Char’s Counterattack. Though she died before the end of the One Year War, Lalah Sune’s spirit occasionally returns from beyond the grave to haunt both Char and Amuro Ray, as depicted in Kidou Senshi Gundam: GQuuuuuuX.
