Bulma

Summary

Bulma is an Earthling born in Age 733, standing 5' 5" tall and weighing 108 lbs. She has a passion for inventing, loves strawberries, and enjoys driving all types of vehicles. Originally a secondary main character, her role is gradually downplayed as the series progresses, though she remains a vital support figure for much of the story. Her character is a direct parody of Xuanzang from the Chinese novel Journey to the West. While her original Japanese name, Buruma, references a brand of gym shorts popular among girls in Japan, her adapted name Bulma derives from bloomers, a type of women's underwear from the early 20th century. As the second character introduced in the Dragon Ball series, Bulma is the inventor of the Dragon Radar and searches for the legendary Dragon Balls with the initial goal of wishing for the perfect boyfriend. During her search for a nearby ball, she encounters Son Goku, who possesses the four-star ball inherited from his Grandpa Gohan. Because Goku believes his grandfather's spirit resides within the ball and loves it dearly, he refuses to give it up. Bulma negotiates a loan of the ball in exchange for allowing Goku to join her travels, leading them to team up to find the remaining balls and begin their adventure. In the later, action-focused episodes, there is little room for a genius inventor, yet Bulma continues to serve as a secondary character by aiding Goku and his friends with her gadgets and navigating a rocky relationship with Yamcha.
