Saotome, Genma

Summary

Genma Saotome serves as the father of Ranma Saotome and the head instructor of the Musabetsu Kakutō Ryū dojo, a martial arts style also referred to as Anything Goes Martial Arts. During a ten-year training journey intended to hone their combat skills, Genma mistakenly believed Jusenkyo in China was a legitimate training facility. Unaware of the local curses due to a language barrier, he failed to recognize the danger until Ranma accidentally knocked him into a cursed spring. Genma fell into the Spring of Drowned Panda, or Shonmaoniichuan, which causes victims to transform into the creature that drowned there upon contact with cold water. Consequently, he turns into a giant panda when wet with cold water, a condition that reverses when he is washed with hot water. Despite their shared misfortune, Genma returned to Japan with Ranma to honor a marriage pact made with his friend Soun Tendo. The agreement stipulated that Ranma would marry one of Soun’s daughters to inherit the dojo. Genma and Soun agreed that the youngest daughter, Akane, was the intended bride, a decision made after her sisters had already chosen their own partners. Genma now lives at the Tendo Dojo alongside Ranma, eagerly awaiting the day the couple marries. In his daily life, he spends much of his time playing Go or Shogi with Soun and once worked briefly at Dr. Tofu’s clinic. Unlike characters such as Ryoga, Mousse, and Shampoo, Genma’s clothing reappears automatically when he shifts back to his human form, although his gi top and glasses occasionally remain on him in his panda state, a trait he shares with Pantyhose Taro.
