Katsura, Yukiji
Summary
Katsura Yukiji is a 28-year-old world history teacher at Hakuō Academy, where she also serves as a round-the-clock gate guard. As the older sister of Hinagiku, she initially denies Hayate entry to the school, fearing that allowing unauthorized personnel on campus will lead to a salary deduction. Her demeanor softens after Hayate rescues her from falling off the clock tower, yet she still nearly causes his rejection by unnecessarily stressing him during the entrance exam. To make amends, she declares to her class on his first day that he is incredibly cool. Yukiji spends much time with a group of underachieving students, including Izumi, Miki, and Risa, and resides on the Hakuō campus to save on rent, which she redirects toward buying alcohol. A recurring gag involves her willingness to do anything for money, such as permitting an evil spirit to possess her in exchange for a million yen. When Makimura Shiori arrives as a new teacher, Yukiji is demoted to sub-homeroom teacher but later regains her original position when Shiori receives a promotion. In the volume four manga extras, the author reveals that Yukiji and Hinagiku originated as characters in an earlier one-shot about two sisters attempting to pay off an 80 million Yen debt.
