Hayate Ayasaki, a 16-year-old, endures an endless stream of misfortunes. Though still a minor, he works multiple part-time jobs to support his negligent parents. His situation worsens when they disappear, leaving him with a massive debt of nearly 150 million yen, forcing him to hide from creditors. Desperate and seeing a brief chance in a park, Hayate contemplates his grim future and considers kidnapping a wealthy child for ransom. He spots an elegantly dressed blonde girl and moves to grab her, only to realize someone else has already abducted her. After rescuing her, Hayate asks for a job as his reward. The girl turns out to be the daughter of a wealthy family and hires him as her butler. Despite this new employment, Hayate's streak of bad luck continues, dragging him into a series of frustrating situations.
