Kūkaku, born on October 1, is a fiery fireworks expert famous for her eccentrically themed residences. During the Bount arc, she reveals she is the same age as Kisuke Urahara. Her appearance varies between media; the anime depicts her with a prosthetic right arm, whereas the manga illustrates her with merely a stump. She aids Ichigo and his companions by launching them into Seireitei using her special Kakaku Cannon. A member of the former noble Shiba clan, she has a tragic past involving her older brother, Kaien, who was fused with a hollow. This incident ultimately forced Rukia Kuchiki to kill him. Although she does not appear to be a shinigami, Kūkaku possesses advanced kidō skills and carries a short-bladed sword on her back.
