Lithuania

Summary

Lietuania, representing the Lietuvos Respublika with its capital in Vilnius, is the oldest of the Baltic Brothers. In human form, he is known as Tolys Laurinaitis and appears to be nineteen years old, though his actual height remains unknown. Born on February 16th, his national flower is the Rue. He is characterized by a gentle heart but suffers from chronic worry, often fixating on heavy topics like life and death to the point of severe depression and stomachaches. This anxiety makes him an easy target for bullying, a dynamic that contributes to his tragic reputation as having the highest suicide rate in the world. Despite his introverted nature, he is kind and caring toward others. His interests include martial arts, literature, creating bizarre amusement parks, and experimenting with condiments, as he is quite particular about taste. He drives a definitely second-hand car and bears several deep scars on his back. Visually, colored illustrations by Hidekaz Himaruya depict him with brown hair and green eyes, whereas the anime portrays him with dark blue eyes. Lietuania’s best friend is Poland, who affectionately calls him “Liet.” Their bond dates back to medieval times when they united to form the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, a powerful entity that conquered more than half of Europe and controlled Central Europe. However, the alliance was eventually fractured by Russia, which later created the Soviet Union. Despite this painful history, the two remain close friends and reportedly attended rehabilitation together to cope with the trauma inflicted by Russia. Russia claims Lithuania is his “favorite,” a euphemism for victim, and frequently picks on him or forces him to take the blame for various incidents. Lithuania once escaped this abuse by working as a housekeeper in America’s home for roughly a decade, but was compelled to return when the Great Depression struck. Despite his dislike for Russia, Lithuania harbors a massive crush on Belarus, who despises him in return. When he managed to secure a date with her, the encounter lasted only three minutes before she broke his fingers. Oblivious to her cruelty, he insisted his fingers were not broken, merely capable of bending that way. While his human name is frequently rendered as “Taurys Laurinaitis,” the more accurate spelling is “Tolys Laurinaitis,” as Tolys is a genuine Lithuanian name while Taurys is not.
