Kotomine, Risei
Summary
Risei Kotomine is the eighty-year-old father of Kirei Kotomine and serves as a priest in the Church, acting as the regulator for both the third and fourth Holy Grail Wars. A close friend of Tokiomi Tōsaka, Risei actively supports his colleague and conspires to ensure that Tokiomi secures the Holy Grail, a decision that contradicts his duty as a Church member to guarantee that such a powerful artifact goes only to a truly worthy recipient. Although he takes pride in his son as a perfect heir, Risei completely fails to understand Kirei’s inner nature. He assumes that the recent loss of Kirei’s wife of two years has left his son without purpose, believing that assisting Tokiomi during the war will help him find meaning again. When Risei and Tokiomi discovered that Kirei’s command mantra had appeared three years prior to the war’s start, they concluded that he was destined to provide Tokiomi with an extra Servant and corresponding command spells. Deceiving their son about the true nature of the mark, they transferred Kirei from the Church to the Mages Association as Tokiomi’s pupil. They withheld the fact that he could also obtain the Holy Grail, instead telling the young man that he was undertaking a mission for the Church.
