Shi, Ryuuki

Summary

Ryuuki Shi serves as the reigning emperor of Saiunkoku, assuming the throne at the age of nineteen. As the youngest of six brothers, his path to the imperial seat was unexpected, especially since four of his elder siblings killed one another in succession disputes and another was exiled for treason. His childhood was marked by severe mistreatment from his mother and siblings, who beat him and locked him in closets for hours, claiming his birth order was inferior and that he stole affection from his brothers. Seien was the only family member who showed him genuine care. These traumatic experiences instilled in Ryuuki a deep-seated fear of darkness and sleeping alone, leading him to seek refuge in the garden or the imperial archives. It was in the archives that he first met Shouka Kou, who served as his tutor and encouraged War General Taifu Sou to instruct him in swordsmanship. Ryuuki ascended to the throne only to fulfill his father's dying wish, but he subsequently avoided all political and governmental duties. He spent hours wandering the palace to remain elusive and even spread rumors about his preference for men to suggest he could not produce an heir. His ultimate goal was for his beloved brother Seien to return and replace him as Emperor. However, his refusal to accept responsibility ended upon meeting Shuurei, who shared her ambition to improve the lives of the nation's citizens. Inspired by her dreams, Ryuuki resolved to embrace his duties and become a respectable ruler.
