In the mythical medieval kingdom of Saiunkoku, the story follows Shuurei Kou, a member of a once-prominent family now struggling with poverty. Though her father holds the respected position of a librarian in the Imperial palace, it provides little income, so Shuurei supports her family by teaching at a local temple school and taking on various odd jobs. All the while, she secretly dreams of passing the imperial exams to enter government service, a goal she cannot achieve because of her gender. Her life changes when the Emperor's Grand Advisor presents her with an unexpected opportunity: become the young Emperor's consort for six months and help him become a responsible ruler, in exchange for a large reward. The story unfolds as Shuurei builds relationships with the Emperor and other key figures at court, navigates the complex political schemes surrounding the throne, and remains dedicated to her own growth and the prosperity of her country.
