Hibiki, Ryouga
Seiyuu / Dub
Summary
Ryouga Hibiki is easily recognizable by his perpetually disheveled appearance. He spends much of his time wandering alone, often depressed by his isolation in the wilderness. His condition is exacerbated by a curse that transforms him into a defenseless pig when wet, leaving him vulnerable to predators or hungry humans. Like his entire family, he possesses absolutely no sense of direction. He cannot navigate correctly, often following literal instructions to the letter even when paths change, and cannot draw legible maps. This issue is not due to a lack of effort; for example, he once followed a brook instead of a lake edge to reach a visible statue. Even when possessed by the bakeneko Maomolin, who attempted to guide him, navigation remained impossible. Medically, this resembles an autistic limitation or brain damage, though it may be a family curse. In the anime, his condition is worsened by his ability to traverse immense distances on foot in surprisingly little time, a supernatural trait that makes his location unpredictable. This combination leads him to miss destinations by vast margins, such as ending up in Hong Kong when trying to reach Hokkaido. He carries a survival backpack for these emergencies. The manga presents this as less supernatural, focusing on his comedic ability to appear at odd moments. While he does not explicitly traverse continents under his own power as often, he once overshot Tokyo by 500 miles twice in a row and, with the Kinjakan’s aid, traveled from Jusenkyo to Moscow and back for dumplings. His personal map includes bizarre landmarks like the Tendo dojo, African tribesmen, and France. His family home is near Mount Fuji, where his dog Shirokuro lives. Due to his poor navigation, the house is usually empty, forcing Ryouga into a nomadic life. Shirokuro, however, can always find him in both human and pig forms. Ranma once helped lead him home during high school. His curse and lack of direction frequently result in misery, loneliness, and hunger. Initially introduced as angry and unapproachable, he is actually emotional, naive, and shy, often following his heart over his head. He is emotionally fragile, using depression as a source for his chi projection. He is polite, especially to women, and easily tricked by manipulative characters. Any kindness shown to him earns his extreme loyalty and self-sacrificing gratitude. A running joke is that he is always fooled by female Ranma’s disguises, a trait Ranma exploits to tease Ryouga or sabotage his dates with Akane.
