Mouri, Kogorou

Summary

Mouri Kogorou is a private detective and the father of Ran. He previously served in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Division One alongside Inspector Megure, where he was recognized as an excellent marksman but proved to be a lackluster investigator. His departure from the police force coincided with his wife, Kisaki Eri, moving out. Although ten years have elapsed, the couple has never officially divorced. Kogorou possesses an inflated sense of his own importance and detective abilities. He remains oblivious to the fact that he frequently passes out at crime scenes and solves cases while asleep, adopting different deductions than those he makes while awake. His professional conduct is often poor, characterized by sarcastic and blunt remarks directed at suspects and even his own clients. During investigations, he typically relies on obvious clues or assumptions, leading to conclusions that are often silly or fall directly into a culprit’s trap. Consequently, the police, particularly Megure, view him as an embarrassment when he is conscious and eagerly anticipate the emergence of "Nemuri no Kogorou" (Sleeping Detective). A serious side of Kogorou emerges only when cases hold personal significance, such as when Eri or Ran are involved. In these instances, his demeanor shifts entirely, and he acts with professionalism, displaying enhanced deductive skills and cunning. While he does not reach the standards of Shinichi and may still struggle to find clues, his logical reasoning improves, and he often demonstrates a superior grasp of interpersonal relationships compared to Shinichi. Kogorou is easily infatuated with beautiful women. His favorite celebrity is pop idol Okino Yoko, and he makes every effort to watch her television shows. He maintains a large collection of Yoko-related merchandise, and his office and bedroom are adorned with her posters. This flirtatious behavior frequently embarrasses Ran. Although it is not explicitly stated as the cause of their separation, this trait is a primary reason Eri has not returned to him. While never explicitly labeled an alcoholic, Kogorou tends to get intoxicated. Shinichi or Conan often makes sarcastic comments about his spending on alcohol. In the anime, especially in early episodes, his office is cluttered with empty beer cans, and he keeps a well-stocked liquor shelf. He is also a heavy smoker and is usually seen with a cigarette. Other hobbies include watching Okino Yoko, betting on horse races, playing mahjong (which he tends to lose), and playing or watching baseball, including participating in his neighborhood’s team. In the movies, Kogorou suffers from a mild acrophobia, or fear of heights, becoming uncomfortable in high settings where he can see how far up he is. This fear is not present in the manga.
