Summary
Antonio Fernández Carriedo, known as Spain and representing the Reino de España, is a lush southern European kingdom with its capital in Madrid. He celebrates his birthday on February 12th and favors the Carnation as his national flower. While his age is listed as 25 in appearance, his height remains unknown. He possesses somewhat curly brown hair, green eyes, and lightly tanned skin, which occasionally appears fair or olive. Always sporting a happy smile, he prides himself on his warm climate, abundant sunshine, and rich nature. In the past, Spain raised Romano, formerly known as Chibiromano. Although he initially desired to take in Italy (Chibitalia), he ended up with Romano after Austria intervened. Despite Romano’s bitter and negative feelings toward him, Spain cared deeply for his wellbeing, even fighting off France and Turkey (then the Ottoman Empire) to remain at Romano’s side. He spoiled Romano to reassure him of his affection, believing Romano favored Italy more. Spain taught Romano everything he knew, creating significant cultural similarities between them. Even though Romano no longer lives with him, Spain remains highly affectionate and keeps him close to his heart. Spain shares a strong attachment to Italy, whose ultimate dream is to have both Italy and Romano live with him. Their relationship remains close, with Italy still addressing him as “Spain-niichan.” Spain was also the one who gave Italy the nickname “Ita-chan.” At one time, Belgium and the Netherlands also resided in his home. While their current dynamic is unclear, the Netherlands was depicted celebrating Christmas with Spain in a 2010 strip. Spain was once allied with France and Prussia, a connection that often sees them depicted together. Fans refer to this group as the “Bad Friends Trio,” “Bad Touch Trio,” or “Useless Big Brother Trio.” Historically, they were allies during the War of Austrian Succession, demonstrating deep loyalty to one another. Mangaka Himaruya Hidekaz has stated that the trio are best friends. Spain’s personality is bright, optimistic, and reminiscent of a cheerful country bumpkin. He attributes his happiness to the constant sunshine over his land. However, he can be terrifying when angry, sometimes appearing insensitive or clueless, and easily becomes sidetracked or enthusiastic. Once an extremely powerful nation, Spain was defeated by a young America, pirate England, and the Netherlands, leading to poverty and the loss of his superpower status. Thanks to his easy-going nature, he has recovered over time. His cuisine features tomatoes extensively, along with sweets that are notably not very sweet.
