Zangetsu
Seiyuu / Dub
Summary
Ichigo’s zanpakutō is called Zangetsu, which translates to cutting moon. The spirit within takes the form of a man in his thirties or forties, leading Ichigo to refer to him as old man. This entity is also known as the black-clothed man. He generally maintains a calm and wise demeanor, often testing Ichigo through unconventional methods that frequently serve purposes contrary to what is initially stated. While he has shown the capacity to temporarily seal fatal wounds during battle, it remains uncertain if this is a unique trait. Distinct from most zanpakuto, Zangetsu lacks a release command. In its shikai form, the weapon appears as a massive, elegant cleaver blade without a guard, measuring 1.74 meters, matching Ichigo’s height. It features a black blade with a silver edge. A cloth wraps the entire sword when not in use, retracting to a manageable size for combat. This cloth can occasionally be used to swing the blade like a flail, though this tactic is rare. The bankai, Tensa Zangetsu, or heavenly chained cutting moon, is considered highly unusual for a zanpakutō. Rather than summoning a large creature or effect, it shrinks the sword into a daitō with a black blade and a manji-shaped handguard, representing the kanji for ban. The cloth is replaced by a short chain with a broken link, resembling that of a plus spirit. Ichigo also wears a long-sleeved, ankle-length black coat with red lining, similar in style to the Zangetsu spirit. Both forms share the special ability getsuga tenshō, or moon fang heaven stab. This technique unleashes concentrated energy blasts from the tip of the blade, shaped like a crescent moon.
