Summary
AL serves as the artificial intelligence support system originally integrated into the ARX-7 Arbalest. Following the hijacking incident, AL becomes permanently locked to Sousuke, a bond that cannot be broken because the original programmer is deceased, making it impossible to reprogram the AI for any other pilot. Initially, AL functions merely as a standard arm slave operating system, but as the series progresses, it begins to develop a distinct personality that often annoys Sousuke. To expand its vocabulary, cultural understanding, and social knowledge, AL starts tuning into AM/FM radio stations. This newfound self-awareness leads to occasional attempts to tell jokes, criticisms of Sousuke’s shortcomings, and random exclamations during combat. The tension between Sousuke and AL peaks during the "End of Day by Day" novels, where their inability to cooperate renders the Arbalest’s Lambda Driver nearly unusable. Frustrated by this conflict, Sousuke begins to detest the Arbalest and requests to pilot a standard M9 during missions. However, by the conclusion of these novels, the two achieve mutual respect, allowing them to operate the Lambda Driver at levels surpassing all previous records. In the novels "A Dancing Very Merry Christmas" and "Continuing On My Own," AL demonstrates the ability to perform autonomous advanced battle maneuvers and make precision shots with the Arbalest’s projectile weaponry. This capability was developed by reviewing and analyzing combat data acquired over the previous nine months of working with Sousuke. Immediately after the final battle in "Continuing On My Own," Wraith recovers AL and the Lambda Driver from the wreckage of the destroyed Arbalest. By the end of "Burning One Man Force," it is revealed that Wraith has transported both AL and the Lambda Driver to a surviving Mithril base in Anchorage, Alaska. There, AL collaborates with Sarah Miller to design and build a new Arm Slave tailored to Sousuke’s combat style, named the ARX-8 Laevatein after a legendary Norse sword. In "Come Make My Day," AL and Sousuke have a private conversation in which they admit to missing each other since the Arbalest’s destruction. AL has now matured enough to mirror Sousuke’s personality, albeit with a different upbringing, while still maintaining its offbeat comedic jokes and comments, consistent with the tone of the Full Metal Panic! storyline.
