Rukawa, Kaede

Summary

Kaede Rukawa, a freshman at Shohoku High School, is defined by his intense rivalry with Sakuragi, whom he views as an idiot. While they share a lack of academic interest and fighting prowess, their personalities diverge sharply; Rukawa is a cold, unfeeling basketball prodigy who attracts female attention, whereas Sakuragi is hot-headed. Rukawa possesses a wide array of skills that complement his 187cm frame and athleticism, earning him the title of Shohoku’s undisputed ace and the nickname "super-rookie." His passion for sleep is legendary; he is often seen napping, even while riding his bicycle, and waking him is considered an unforgivable offense that usually results in violence. On the court, Rukawa’s drive to win is unmatched. During the Kanagawa Interhigh Tournament, he became the only first-year player named to the top five, demonstrating his ability to single-handedly shift game momentum, such as scoring 15 consecutive points in just over two minutes against Kainan. However, his initially selfish playstyle drew criticism and conflicted with Coach Anzai, who discouraged Rukawa’s desire to play in the USA until he first proved himself as the best in Japan. A pivotal moment occurred during the match against Sannoh Technical, where being outplayed by Sawakita reminded Rukawa of the challenge posed by his true rival, Sendoh of Ryonan. Realizing he needed to evolve, Rukawa learned to pass the ball, setting up Hanamichi’s buzzer-beater to secure victory. This growth led to his selection for the All-Japan basketball team, fulfilling his ultimate goal of becoming the best high school player in the nation.
