Virgo, Shaka

Summary

Shaka, the Gold Saint of Virgo, stands as one of the Twelve Gold Saints and the guardian of the Temple of Virgo within the Sanctuary. Born in India with blonde hair and blue eyes, he possesses an immense Cosmos that surpasses even that of Libra Dohko and Aries Shion, earning him the title of "the man who is almost a god" or the saint closest to attaining godhood. He is the only Gold Saint to fully control the Araya Shiki, or eighth sense. As a child, Shaka was precocious and sensitive to human suffering, witnessing despair in the reflections of the River Ganges. This led him to seek detachment, viewing human emotions with compassion but without attachment, observing humanity from a divine perspective rather than experiencing it personally. His apprentices include Peacock Shiva and Lotus Aghora in the anime adaptations. His fighting style relies on depriving himself of sight to store Cosmos energy, releasing it when he opens his eyes. He employs various techniques, including the defensive Hāṃ barrier and offensive moves like Demon Pacifier, which expands his Cosmos to blast multiple targets, and Heaven Supremacy on evil spirits, which summons minor spirits to attack enemies. His signature technique, The Treasures of Heavens, is a combined offensive and defensive move that traps victims and systematically removes their five senses—sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch—effectively reducing them to living corpses by halting brain functions associated with the sixth sense. This power is destructive enough to break through opponent's Cloths. He also uses concentration techniques derived from Hinduism and Buddhism, such as Om to maximize his Cosmo energy and Tenpōrin Mudra to eliminate mental doubts during combat. Shaka is also known for casting illusions, most notably Transmigration to the Six Paths, which sends opponents to one of six rebirth realms: Gakikai, Jinkai, Jigokukai, Chikushōkai, Shurakai, and Tenkai. Notably, Kurumada presents these Buddhist realms as separate from the Dante-inspired underworld of the Hades arc, with Tenkai being considered the worst fate. Throughout the Sanctuary arc and the Hades arc, Shaka plays a pivotal role in the conflict between Athena and the Pope. Despite his divine-like detachment, his encounter with Ikki forces him to confront his humanity, reminding him that he is a man as well as a Bodhisattva. Shaka eventually meets his demise, with flashbacks revealing his spiritual communion with God moments before his death in the Twin Sala's Garden.
