Summary
Born on February 17, 1981, Chiaki is a twenty-one-year-old third-year piano student at Momogaoka Music Academy at the beginning of the series. Standing 181cm tall with blood type O, he is an Aquarius who hails from a distinguished and wealthy family. Although he is a skilled pianist and violinist, he is also a perfectionist who is highly critical of both himself and those around him. He possesses decent cooking skills and holds a somewhat condescending view of impoverished individuals, likening them to the little match girl. Chiaki’s ultimate goal is to study abroad and become a renowned conductor, following in the footsteps of his mentor, Sebastiano Viella. However, he must first conquer his intense fear of flying and the sea, a hurdle he eventually overcomes with the help of Nodame’s hypnosis. Initially dismayed to discover that the eccentric yet talented Nodame lives in the apartment next door, he gradually develops an empathy for her as he recognizes her hidden potential as a great pianist. This connection helps him transcend his rigid perfectionism, allowing him to appreciate her music and that of others. Despite his frequent irritation with Nodame, he eventually falls in love with her and decides to pursue a conducting career in Paris, where he plans to continue his studies. As he realizes his ambition, Chiaki understands that he cannot move forward without Nodame’s support. His character is deeply influenced by a fear of being abandoned, a trauma stemming from his father leaving him as a young boy. Consequently, he often preempts rejection by abandoning others, particularly Nodame. He is also terrified of being surpassed by her, constantly trying to distance himself from her, which causes her misery as she strives to catch up. This behavior, combined with his general insensitivity, defines much of his interpersonal struggles.
