Summary
Kami-sama is a fictional character from the manga and anime series Saiyuki, serving as a devoted servant to Dr. Jianyi, also known as Ukoku Sanzo. While his master refers to him as Kami-sama, he is frequently called Nameless Sanzo due to the absence of an official Sanzo title. During a climactic confrontation in Saiyuki Reload, Genjyo Sanzo challenged him on this lack of heritage, stating that while Genjyo may have inherited the power, robe, and city, he never succeeded the title of Sanzo. This revelation caused Kami-sama’s mind to become agitated and lost, cementing his identity as Nameless Sanzo. He ultimately proved to be one of the most formidable adversaries Genjyo Sanzo and the Sanzo-Ikkou faced in the second series. Physically, Kami-sama bears a birthmark on the right side of his face and possesses a cheerful, childlike demeanor, often smiling in a manner similar to his master. He enjoys fun and collects plush toys. He resides in a castle constructed by Ukoku Sanzo, bound by a pact stating that the structure will crumble and die if he does. As a child, he sought Ukoku Sanzo’s pity and care, which was granted, leading to his lifelong loyalty. Ukoku Sanzo trained him and passed down his knowledge and powers, unaware that the child was being groomed as a pawn to kill Genjyo Sanzo and the Sanzo-Ikkou. Kami-sama wears a long string of Buddha beads that encircle his body, believed to grant him magical abilities. These powers enhance his dexterity, allowing him to fly and dodge enemy attacks while providing protection against heavy blows. The beads can also serve as offensive weapons, piercing enemies at close range or capturing and strangling them from a distance. Additionally, he can summon a palm-sized rod topped with golden peach-shaped fruits at both ends, which he uses to command floating beads to move erratically like projectiles. This weapon was powerful enough to cause one of Genjyo Sanzo and the Sanzo-Ikkou’s most bitter defeats. He also possesses the ability to cast illusion spells. He once deceived Ginkaku into believing his brother Jingkaku had transformed into a hideous beast. To deter intruders, he created an endless looping route in the forest surrounding his castle and a Maze of Fog at the entrance. To assist him in battle against the four fighters, Kami-sama commands an army of plush toys within his castle. These figures are made from captured human souls of those deemed wicked by Ginkaku and rise to serve him when he is in danger.
