Summary
Shidou Itsuka is the sixteen-year-old protagonist of the series and a student at Raizen High School. Originally abandoned by his mother, he was adopted into the Itsuka family. He possesses a unique ability that allows him to seal a Spirit’s power within his own body through a kiss, a feat that requires the Spirit to hold sufficient trust or affection toward him. While the seal relies on mutual feelings, Shidou’s genuine desire to help Spirits is often the catalyst for this bond. Recruited by the organization Ratatoskr under the guidance of his sister Kotori Itsuka, Shidou’s mission is to prevent spacequakes not by destroying Spirits, but by sealing their powers to enable peaceful coexistence with humans. Personality-wise, Shidou is an average teenage boy who initially had little interest in the opposite gender, a stance shifted by his sister’s insistence. He is deeply kind-hearted and empathetic, traits that resonate with Spirits who have long lacked acceptance and understanding. This compassion even influenced Miku Izayoi, who viewed others as puppets, to alter her worldview. His ability was first discovered when Kotori transformed into a Spirit, revealing that the sealing process demands high levels of intimacy and trust. Once sealed, Shidou can borrow their powers, though using abilities other than regeneration causes him severe physical pain. Shidou shares a protective bond with his sister Kotori, deeply valuing her promise to wait for him at their family restaurant regardless of circumstances. His relationship with Tohka is particularly profound, extending beyond friendship. He named her based on their first meeting date and consistently strives to teach her about the world and make her happy. When Tohka was captured by DEM, Shidou prioritized her rescue above all else, despite the extreme danger. He also maintains a respectful dynamic with Reine Murasame, finding it easier to communicate with her than other crew members, though he frequently corrects her when she mispronounces his name. With Yoshino, Shidou serves as a hero and savior, earning her immense trust and gratitude for helping her find Yoshinon. This trust enabled him to seal her powers. His encounter with Kurumi Tokisaki was traumatic; she was the first Spirit he faced who was actively hostile and ruthless. Despite his fear and her intent to consume him, Shidou resolved to save her after Tohka explained that Spirits could become like Kurumi if left alone. Although he has not yet succeeded in sealing her, Kurumi has fallen for him, displaying yandere tendencies and teasing him openly, including after he crossdressed to interact with Miku. Miku Izayoi initially hated Shidou due to her general misandry stemming from past trauma. Shidou remained caring, even crossdressing to speak with her and risking his life to stop her berserk state and protect her from assault. His relationships with his classmates are generally mundane, though his male peers grew jealous after Tohka and Origami began competing for his attention.
