Mitsui, Hisashi
Summary
Mitsui Hisashi is a third-year student at Shohoku, born on May 22nd. Standing 184 centimeters tall and weighing 70 kilograms, he wears size 14 shoes and plays as a Shooting Guard, donning jersey number 14. Before enrolling at Shohoku, he was the Most Valuable Player at Takeishi Junior High. Although prestigious schools like Ryonan recruited him, he chose Shohoku because Coach Anzai inspired him to victory during a crucial moment in a junior high tournament. However, a left knee injury sustained during practice forced him to quit basketball. An ill-advised early return caused a severe reinjury, leading to a hiatus of over a year. During his absence, Mitsui grew embittered and became the leader of a delinquent gang. He clashed with Miyagi in a fight, where he was thoroughly beaten. Later, he tried to disqualify the Shohoku basketball team by instigating a brawl with his gang. When Sakuragi’s gang members—Yohei, Takamiya, Ookusu, and Noma—voluntarily took the blame for the incident, Mitsui felt deep remorse after seeing Coach Anzai. He rejoined the team and promised never to fight again. On the court, Mitsui is renowned as a three-point specialist, though his skills are versatile. In practice, he successfully neutralized Sakuragi, who played center, and completely shut down Fukuda’s scoring during a match. His long-range shooting helped Shohoku overcome deficits of 12 points against Shoyo and 20 points against Sannoh in the National Championships. His primary weakness is poor stamina resulting from his long break. Consequently, his performance often declines in the second half of games; he missed a potential game-winning shot against Kainan and collapsed on the court during the match against Ryonan.
